Maxwell’s Demon

James Clerk Maxwell first wrote about his demon in 1871 in his book, Theory of Heat. The actual passage from the book has been quoted often enough that I will not repeat it once again here, but I’ll offer the basic original concept. Maxwell posits a volume containing a gas and which is divided into two halves, call them A and B. In the divider is a hole that can be opened or closed by some frictionless means.
